A cake smash is one of the most joyful sessions I do: your little one, a cake, and absolutely no rules. Here's how to set the day up for smiles.
Time it around your child's best hours. A well-rested, recently-fed toddler is a happy toddler, so we aim for after a nap and a light snack.
Keep the outfit simple. Something soft and easy to clean (or to remove for the messy part) works best, and lighter colors photograph beautifully against my all-white setup.
Choose a cake with a soft texture and a color that pops. Buttercream is easier for little hands than fondant, and it makes for a wonderfully messy finish.
Most importantly, let them explore. Some babies dive straight in; others take their time. Both make for genuine, personality-filled photos, there's no wrong way to smash a cake.
